An Overview of the Yamaha Hybrid Piano

Image
Yamaha stands at the forefront of piano innovation, introducing a diverse range of hybrid pianos that blend acoustic and digital elements. Unlike traditional acoustic pianos, hybrid models, such as the NU1, feature an acoustic action without strings, presenting a unique crossover experience. One of Yamaha’s standout innovations is the Disklavier, a proprietary player system introduced in 1982. It has undergone significant advancements, enabling it to replicate every nuance of a performance and stream it globally. Key features of the Disklavier include:  - An optical sensor system that captures human-like variations in key, hammer, and pedal movements. - Up to 1,024 dynamic levels for key and hammer velocities, along with 256 unique pedal positions. - The ability to stream performances with video and record them. During a piano tuning appointment, clients will often ask questions like “How often should my piano be tuned?,” “What kind of work do you recommend to fix my piano?” or even just “How bad was it?” We always appreciate these kinds of questions, because they represent an underlying concern about keeping the piano working properly. We feel a strong responsibility to give these questions answers that will help people understand their piano better, and it is from the conversations that result from these questions that I am attempting to distill some useful information here for current and future piano owners.   A common question we get asked is “What should I do with an old piano?” When it comes to modern appliances, devices, clothes, toys we consider something ‘old’ after maybe 7-10 years. (Who still uses the same phone they had 10 years ago?) When it comes to acoustic pianos, old typically means anywhere from 50 - 120 years old! Many old uprights and grands still exist in people’s homes today that were acquired and passed down from previous generations. These instruments for the most part were wonderful instruments in their time. Many pianos from the early 1900s through the 50’s were made in the USA under many different reputable brands. The fact that so many century old pianos are still around and playable today is a testament to the fine craftsmanship and quality of materials used. At some point though, every piano has a shelf life. Even the most excellent quality pianos made with the finest materials will need to be refurbished / rebuilt at some point. Strings and hammers typically...

Piano Tuning and Maintenance | Piano Tuning Columbia MO

Image
In the year of this writing, in the state of Missouri, there are three major competitors remaining in the market of new piano sales that retain sales locations in the state, that is, the Japanese piano corporations Yamaha and Kawai, and the German/American Steinway Co.. These three makers have something in common that has allowed them to thrive where others have sunk, among other differences, and that is that they all invest heavily into the quality of their products. Where they differ is a bit trickier to define without resorting to technical definitions, but when talking with clients, I will sometimes reach to the automotive industry for metaphor and compare Yamaha and Kawai loosely with Honda and Toyota, by happy coincidence two japanese auto brands that also offer quality products, and combine both relative affordability with reliability. Yamaha has arguably stronger brand recognition of the two japanese piano concerns, and many people already associate Yamaha with quality mo...

Piano technology has a vast array of different disciplines one could dedicate their life to perfecting. This is why education remains a cornerstone value of our company. Whether that is annual conventions with the guild, specific brand focused training with manufacturers, and ongoing communication within our team as we sharpen one another’s skills. Piano’s come in a variety of styles, and every brand has it’s quirks. This is why we continue to engage with manufacturers to receive the latest information on how to best service their instruments. Ty Uphoff receiving one on one tuning instruction from “Ace” at Yamaha headquarters. Visiting the manufacturers also gives us a unique perspective on our strengths and weaknesses. While visiting Steinway for training we got the chance to tour the factory. There you see hundreds of technicians all dedicated to one small aspect of piano building. Ty Uphoff exploring the rim room where Steinway reduces the RH % of the wood in preparation of building...

If you are interested in the kinds of things we look at in the course of a full-day service, here are some of things that we look at in the course of a full-day service : Piano Keys:  Most piano keys have two main friction points, in the middle on the center pin, and on the end, where there is a metal capstan that slides along a felt piece attached to the bottom of the piano action. The goal is to minimize friction at both points. The center pin should have minimal play side to side but not be too tight, and the metal capstans are polished, with powder lubricant applied to the felt it touches as well. Additionally, keys can become misaligned, sit crooked,  too high or too low. These will be adjusted in the course of the appointment. Piano Hammers:  The screws may need to be tightened and the hammers spaced to be centered precisely on the strings. Occasionally one might need to adjust the angle of the hammers if they acquire a diagonal slant in their upward motion. ...

Sticking Keys? Why Me?

Image
Why Do Piano Keys Stick? Piano keys can stick for various reasons, but the most common culprits include: 1. Dirt and Debris: Over time, dust, dirt, and debris can accumulate inside a piano, especially under the keys. This buildup can interfere with the keys' movement, causing them to stick. 2. Changes in Humidity: Pianos are sensitive to changes in humidity levels. High humidity can cause the wooden components of the piano, including the keys, to swell, while low humidity can lead to shrinking. Both scenarios can result in keys that don't function smoothly. 3. Wear and Tear: As pianos age, the felt and leather components that facilitate key movement can wear out. This wear and tear can cause keys to stick or become sluggish. 4. Loose or Broken Parts: Loose or broken parts within the piano's action mechanism can also lead to sticking keys. This might include broken springs, hammers, or other components. Sticking keys on a piano can be a frustrating issue for pianists, but ...

Should I Buy a Digital Piano?

Image
Yes! Now to find out why this technician who makes his living off of servicing acoustic pianos would recommend buying a digital piano keep reading. The most commonly cited reason against purchasing a digital piano is that they are not REAL pianos. If we all had unlimited resources and space we would all play on 9ft concert grands prepared by professionals in recital halls worth a quarter of a million dollars. Now THAT is a REAL piano. Everything else is a compromise on that standard for reasons of space and or money. The actions in upright pianos are different than grand pianos, generally less expressive with slower repetition. Spinet pianos are worse yet with shorter keysticks and a “drop” action. When comparing a high end digital piano with a spinet the digital more closely simulates the previously mentioned concert grand. If space is the biggest concern that is one reason people mistakenly consider spinet pianos. While it’s true that spinets are shorter than other vertical pia...

Snapped a Piano String? Here’s Why You Shouldn't Fix It Yourself

Image
A broken piano string can be frustrating — one key sounds off, and suddenly the whole instrument feels wrong. If you’re thinking, “Maybe I can fix this myself,” — hold that thought. Replacing a string might seem like a simple task, but it’s one of those repairs that’s best left to a professional technician. It's Not a Simple Swap Unlike other stringed instruments, piano strings are under extreme tension — often more than 150 pounds per string. They’re also wound through a complex path involving tuning pins, bridge pins, and agraffes or pressure bars. If something’s not aligned just right, it can cause: 1. Persistent tuning problems 2. Unwanted buzzing or muted tone 3. Structural damage to the piano 4. Premature string breakage all over again One wrong move can create more problems than it solves. Read more... Hiring a technician might feel like a hassle, but for something as delicate as string replacement, it’s the smart move. Your piano will thank you — visit Vanguard Piano Servic...

Steinway Piano Tuning

The Art and Science of Steinway Piano Tuning Steinway pianos are more than instruments; they are masterpieces of craftsmanship, known for their unparalleled sound quality and exquisite design. Owning a Steinway piano is a privilege, but it comes with the responsibility of proper maintenance to preserve its timeless elegance and rich tonal character. Among the most critical aspects of this maintenance is regular tuning. Why Regular Tuning is Essential A Steinway piano is an intricate combination of over 12,000 parts, many of which are sensitive to environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. These fluctuations can cause the wooden components and strings to expand or contract, leading to a shift in pitch. Regular tuning ensures that the piano retains its intended sound, providing a harmonious experience for both the player and the audience. Professional tuning not only restores the pitch but also helps in maintaining the structural integrity of the instrument. Prolonged neglec...

Understanding Humidity Changes and Your Piano

As a piano technician, one of the frequent questions I get from piano owners is about how to take care of the piano better.  There are several ways to do so and today I would like to specifically talk about how humidity affects the piano.  Materials we can find in the piano consist of metal, felt, wool and wood.  Changes in the humidity can affect all of these things that is why it is important to keep the piano in a controlled environment. With the changes in humidity, there are several ways the piano might be impacted. The most immediate change people notice is in the pitch of the piano.  Sometimes you may notice the keys feel weird when they feel heavy to the touch or sometimes stick down in high humidity, other times you may notice there are rattles or clicks when the keys are played with low humidity. Permanent damage may be caused when the piano goes through extreme humidity changes where parts swell and shrink rapidly, this may cause wooden parts to have...

The Full-Day Piano Service: A Quick Rundown

Have you ever suddenly realized that the room you’ve been sitting in is way too hot? Or suddenly realize you are hungry and probably have been for a while. Sometimes it takes our conscious brain a while to catch up to subtle changes in the way we feel. With pianos, if something suddenly goes wrong, it is often immediately apparent: a key stops working, or dampers ring forever, or the pedal squeaks. The decision to pick up the phone and have someone come out and look at the issue is an easy one, and the pain point simple to identify. As pianos age, accompanying subtle changes often require us as musicians to (often subconsciously) put more effort into making the piano sound good. In grand pianos, compression and wear of felt parts throughout the piano mechanism cause alignment problems in the hammers. Slight warping in the wooden parts in all pianos can cause piano hammers to gain extra friction, or strike the strings incorrectly or not at all. Keys can begin to feel significantly...

Pitch vs Tone| Piano Cleaning St Louis

Image
The piano is a remarkable instrument that has enchanted countless musicians and audiences for centuries. Its rich and complex sound is a result of various factors, including pitch and tone. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they represent distinct aspects of the piano’s sonic character. In this blog post, we’ll explore the differences between pitch and tone in a piano, and how they contribute to the instrument’s unique musical qualities. Pitch: The Foundation of Sound Pitch is perhaps the most fundamental aspect of music. It refers to the perceived highness or lowness of a sound and is determined by the frequency of the vibrations that produce it. In the context of a piano, pitch is the parameter that allows us to distinguish between different keys or notes. Frequency: Each key on a piano corresponds to a specific pitch. For example, when you press the middle C key, it produces a specific frequency of sound waves that our ears perceive as the note C. Each key to t...
