Wessell, Nickel & Gross (WNG) — Part 2

Image
With the limitation of wood gone, WNG is able to   design piano parts  that are more accurate and efficient. The material is also stable as it is resistant to changes in the environment, so temperature and humidity changes become less of an issue for these piano parts as well. WNG is able to make different sized parts which can be tailored to each pianist’s preferences. This also helps parts to be fitted in a wide variety of different branded pianos as each of their designs are different. The piano parts also come with different attachments that allow piano rebuilders the option to adjust or improve the piano’s action. This allows rebuilders the chance to make changes to fine tune parts to be ideal for each piano. With the added accuracy of machinery, the parts are now made to be consistent with very little variation. This helps to have a uniform touch for all the keys throughout the piano. Why are those keytops BLUE ?

Image
Why are the keytops blue? This piano is being rebuilt, but we want to refresh the action parts and key sticks rather than replacing them to allow us to keep the original ivory keys. Before Cleaning — Part 1 Before Cleaning — Part 2 Even though it may not dramatically improve the piano’s playing performance, it does impact how the technicians may physically handle the various action parts while rebuilding the action. Cleaning off dust and grime that is 50+ years old helps us work more efficiently and accurately, and contributes to the overall cleanliness of the instrument. Tuning and Musicality ?

Several times a week I am asked if I play piano. As a matter of fact, I do; I have played since i I was seven. Many, many tuners I have met over the past couple years do play piano. However, you don’t need to be a pianist in order to tune pianos! Are you surprised? Having a musical background can help, but it is not essential to performing this job. To do this job well, you need to be a good listener. When you tune a piano, yes, you are listening to a pitch (or several pitches) but you’re more listening to how the sound is changing and behaving. It takes a very trained and keen ear to decipher how a note is responding to your movements.
