Tuning and Musicality ?

Several times a week I am asked if I play piano. As a matter of fact, I do; I have played since i I was seven. Many, many tuners I have met over the past couple years do play piano. However, you don’t need to be a pianist in order to tune pianos!

Are you surprised?

Having a musical background can help, but it is not essential to performing this job. To do this job well, you need to be a good listener.

When you tune a piano, yes, you are listening to a pitch (or several pitches) but you’re more listening to how the sound is changing and behaving. It takes a very trained and keen ear to decipher how a note is responding to your movements.
